Prior to joining my Penny Lane family, I volunteered locally and internationally for children and families who lacked necessities and were vulnerable in their communities. I had a month-long volunteer trip in Africa before joining Penny Lane, where I traveled to various townships to facilitate mentoring groups and support the creation of educational programs. During this time, I also attended California State University, Northridge, where I obtained my BA in Sociology and Social Welfare.
One requirement for obtaining my undergraduate degree at CSUN was to complete internship hours. I attended an internship fair at CSUN in 2016, where I met the FFA Regional Director for Penny Lane, who was recruiting interns. Since then, I have been a part of the PLC family.
My favorite aspect of working at PLC is our sense of community. I have amazing coworkers and friends who are always available to listen and lend a hand. I have met some of my closest friends at PLC!
My path to promotion was smooth and flexible. I had amazing supervisors along the way who provided me with knowledge and resources.
PLC has supported me throughout my career, from an intern in 2016 to an LCSW in 2024. With the flexibility and openness of supervisors, I completed my undergrad intern hours for CSUN, my grad intern hours for USC (FIGHT ON!), and my licensing hours. PLC has been a home away from home, and I am extremely grateful to have such a supportive agency by my side.
I have taken advantage of our fantastic education reimbursement, which helps me with my exam fees and BBS renewals yearly. I have also enrolled in loan forgiveness. I have taken advantage of our amazing internship opportunities across PLC locations, which have allowed me to work full-time while still receiving my internship hours.
The most difficult part of my new role so far has been adjusting to a 12-hour shift. It is not easy but very rewarding.
I am in the process of building a farm. Having a farm was always one of my dreams growing up.
Being a first-generation college student has significantly shaped my life. Growing up in an immigrant family shaped how I feel, view, and relate to others. I have a strong will to help and advocate for people who feel they have no voice.

What I appreciate most about PLC is the opportunities for growth and the support of leadership; when I need them, they are there.
I am grateful for my UMCR partner, Alice, who always has my back!
Congratulations Katie!
