Wellness at Work: Prioritizing Self-Care

When I think of wellness, my mind gravitates towards self-care. For me, self-care is a personal practice that revives my mind and soul. A key part of this routine is listening to records. There's something about the warm, rich sound of vinyl that transports me to a place of calm and simplicity. As the needle drops and the music fills the room, I feel an instant connection to the present moment, letting go of stress and embracing a sense of peace. This simple act of listening to records has become my safe space, a ritual that grounds me and enhances my overall well-being.

I've been collecting records since I was a teenager. I often go to thrift shops, yard sales, and the like, spending hours digging for music gold. Even the act of record digging is a relaxing endeavor.

Working in Intensive Services we often model for our families the act of self-care and the understanding of how it attributes to our well-being. When speaking with our youth it's always encouraging to hear their love of music and how it relates to their self-care and the understanding it used as a coping skill. I could spend hours talking with the kids about music, diving into conversations that uncover the depths of different genres and artists. The act of discovering new bands isn't just a pastime; it's a gateway to exploring new ideas, emotions, and connections. It's in these moments of shared discovery that I find a deeper appreciation for music and the joy of connecting with others through it.

Knowing that wellness consists of “healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes,” I am happy knowing music and collecting records will be a go to for me for years to come.
