Promotional Spotlight: Angela Gretchenuk

Our promotional spotlight employee for March 2025 is Angela Gretchenuk, Therapist – Intensive Services Outpatient.

Angela Gretchenuk’s journey to Penny Lane Centers (PLC) is a testament to the power of transferable skills and the impact of a supportive work environment. Originally from Seattle, Washington, Angela spent over 20 years building a strong client base in retail sales before transitioning into the field of therapy. Her experience in sales and retail management equipped her with invaluable skills, active listening, empathy, and effective communication, all of which have become the foundation of her work as a therapist. She now considers her caseload at PLC her new “client base,” where she fosters trust and creates a safe space for individuals to express themselves.

Angela’s path to PLC was serendipitous, beginning with an internship assignment that she now considers one of the most fortunate turns in her career. In fact, just before receiving her placement at PLC, she heard the Beatles’ song Penny Lane playing in a store and took it as a sign. From that moment on, she fully embraced her journey at the organization, progressing from a case manager to an associate therapist. With the unwavering support of her supervisors and colleagues, Angela has navigated challenges, celebrated achievements, and found a professional home where she feels valued and empowered to make a meaningful difference in the lives of her clients.

What was your journey prior to coming to Penny Lane (PLC)?

I’m originally from Seattle, Washington, and I moved here ten years ago. I have built a large client base in retail sales for over twenty years. I consider my caseload at HSSP Penny Lane to be my client base! I feel that my role in sales and retail management prepared me to serve my clients. My experience in sales has significantly shaped my role as a therapist. I developed crucial skills like active listening, empathy, and effective communication, which are essential in understanding and building trust with clients. Just as I would engage with customers to identify their needs, I create a safe space for clients to express themselves.

What brought you to Penny Lane?

I was lucky enough to get assigned to PLC as an intern in Graduate school. Fun story: Right before I was accepted as an intern at Penny Lane, the Beatles song "Penny Lane" played at a store I was visiting. I took it as a sign.

What is your favorite aspect of working at PLC?

The support and caring that PLC gives the clients and the staff and of course, the people I help and my team!

What was the path to promotion like for you?

During my first year of internship, I began as a case manager at THP in North Hills. After that experience, I persuaded my university's internship committee to allow me to stay at the PLC for my second year as an intern therapist. After I graduated, I was promoted to the role of associate therapist.

How did the PLC team help along the way?

My supervisor, Rose, and Director Parviz were my pillars of support, always encouraging me. QI Kendra and Gabriela were instrumental in helping me learn to document and complete administrative duties related to my position. Their support and guidance made my transition to an associate therapist position seamless and reassured me of the supportive culture at PLC.

What were some benefits that PLC offers that you took advantage of to further your education/career with PLC? (i.e., License renewal, education reimbursement, internship, sign-on bonus, bilingual differential, loan forgiveness, etc.)

I received the sign-on bonus and just recently obtained an educational reimbursement for my required law and ethics exam for licensure. Thank you, PLC!

What has been the most difficult part of your new role thus far?

The most difficult part of this role has been dealing with systemic barriers my clients face outside of the therapeutic space. These barriers can range from lack of access to financial resources to societal stigma and lack of natural support. I wish I could do more to address these issues.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I have a twin sister who has always been my closest confidante. Despite my role as a therapist, I’m a complete introvert. This aspect of my personality influences how I approach my work, often preferring one-on-one interactions over group settings.

What event in your life shaped you significantly?

I have lived through childhood trauma; I have made peace with it. I wouldn't be who I am today without that lived experience.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever got?

Live your life in balance. Live in the Middle Way.

What do you appreciate most about Penny Lane?

I deeply appreciate Penny Lane's welcoming culture. Despite being a large organization, we do not have that corporate mentality. Everywhere I go, whoever I communicate with within the organization, I feel valued and appreciated. This is something I am truly grateful for.

Please share something you are grateful for.

I am grateful that I live in California, especially recently! I’m also grateful for the sunshine!

Congratulations Angela!
